Disable Windows Server Shutdown Event Tracker

The Windows Server Shutdown Event Tracker provides a simple and standard mechanism you can use to consistently document the reasons for shutting down or restarting a server. In this topic you will find guide and a tool i wrote to disable this feature.

The Shutdown Event Tracker records the reason for each shutdown or startup through the Event Log service. You can use Event Viewer to open the system log and look for a pattern of events to find the cause of frequent system restarts and shutdowns.

If you, like me, don`t need this information to be tracked and are anoyed by the prompt shown everytime y6ou need to restart a Windows Server 2003 /2008 operating system you can follow the guide shown below or you can download the attached tool i wrote that automates this procedure.

Guide

  1. Run gpedit.msc (Group Policy Editor) from Run command
  2. Expand Computer Configuration
  3. Expand Administrative Templates
  4. Expand System
  5. Double-click Display Shutdown Event Tracker
  6. Select Disabled.
  7. Click OK to close all dialog boxes
  8. If you want the change to take place without rebooting, refresh policies by running the following command in a Command Prompt window or from the Run command: gpupdate /force
