Disable BugMeNot access to your websites or blogs

Ever have been running a website or blog where a user has to register to post comments and download files like on this blog? Is your site being listed on bugmenot.com? You do not like that? You could ask bugmenot to remove it, allthough i heard they are not very responsive to those request. But, wait what if we just block access to accounts found on the bugmenot website using a XMLHttpRequest?

BugMeNot.com was created as a mechanism to quickly bypass the login of web sites that require compulsory registration and/or the collection of personal/demographic information (such as the New York Times).

Ok, seems fine but why not register? BugMeNot says this:

  • It's a breach of privacy.
  • Sites don't have a great track record with the whole spam thing.
  • It's contrary to the fundamental spirit of the net.
  • It's pointless due to the significant percentage of users who enter fake demographic details anyway.
  • It's a waste of time.
  • It's annoying as hell.
  • Imagine if every site required registration to access content.

Well, i do not agree, if you are interested in my work and would like to download one of files available here you have to respect the fact i can not afford content/downloads to be linked to from other websites. (bassicly a simple bandwidth matter)

Besides that it is a great mechanism to reduce spamming in comments. Ok it might be annoying to some but if you really have something to comment on or really like to download one of the provided files it seems like a little effort!

How do you dissable BugMeNot access to your website/blog?

I crafted up a simple ASP script, that retrieves the logins for a certain domain listed on BugMeNot.com
